Don't Watch The News!
When the election was going on I was a CNN fiend. I watched the news 24/7 and I was quite proud of the fact that as a young man, I was staying on top of world events. Now, ever since the depression has started (Yes, depression) things have changed. I no longer watch the news now. I occasionally check CNN.com so I don't seem like a complete idiot when I want to talk about world events but I refuse to watch any national or local news on TV. Why, you ask? because it's depressing and misleading. Yes, we are in a major economic crisis and all people should believe this but what hope do we have when we are constantly told that it's only going to get worse? I have been trying to find a job and whenever I happen to turn on the news when I'm headed to another channel, I think what's the use. If no one is hiring, why should I look for a job? So, take my advice and don't watch the news!

Good advice. There's a guy on the radio whose wife is a real estate agent and keeps getting asked the same question, "When is it going to get better?" Her answer is always "When Matt Lauer tells you it's better". There's a ton of psychology in play here. If you research the Great Depression, you'll find that one of the contributing factors was fear leading people to liquidate their investments, stop lending, and stop borrowing. That's definitely what's happening now. However, calling this a depression is not quite accurate, as it requires a 10% decrease in GDP. The fourth quarter of 2008 saw a decrease of 3.8%. That's not good at all, but it's not a depression. If it gets as bad as a depression, we do have a way to quantify it and everyone will know. Saying it's a depression when it's not will only make fear worse. There's some bad signs out there in the numbers, but there's also some good ones. Nobody really knows what's going to happen, but I like your idea of keeping away from the negativity. It's easier to keep up hope that way.
